In a tragic and unprecedented Day for security forces, the Tehreek-i-Jihad Pakistan (TJP) orchestrated a deadly attack on a military compound in Dera Ismail Khan's Daraban area.
The onslaught resulted in the martyrdom of at least 23 Pakistan Army soldiers and left over 30 others wounded. The militants, numbering six, stormed the compound, initiating a fierce gun battle that ultimately claimed their lives.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported that simultaneous military operations in Darazinda and Kolachi led to the demise of 21 militants, with two soldiers sacrificing their lives in the line of duty. The ISPR detailed a relentless attempt by the militants, who targeted a security post in Daraban. Their initial assault was followed by a series of explosions, including the detonation of an explosives-laden vehicle and subsequent suicide bombings, causing the building's collapse and resulting in multiple casualties.
Sources revealed that battle-ready troops had occupied a school compound adjacent to the Daraban police station, where they were conducting search and strike operations due to a recent surge in militancy. The assailants utilized an explosive-laden vehicle to breach the compound, followed by multiple suicide blasts inside the school building. The Bomb Disposal Squad estimated over 100kg of high-grade explosives were employed in the prolonged attack, lasting over an hour.
The military's response was swift, with 17 terrorists neutralized in Darazinda and four more in Kulachi. However, the overall toll on soldiers reached 25, emphasizing the severity of the situation. The TJP claimed responsibility for the assault, releasing a purported video showcasing militants using thermal scopes to target security personnel. Authorities disputed the video's authenticity, but the TJP's claim underscored the group's involvement in the attack.
Concerns over cross-border terrorism prompted Pakistan to issue a demarche to the Afghan government, demanding immediate and verifiable actions against militant outfits. The Foreign Secretary emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation and decisive measures against the perpetrators. Pakistan urged Afghanistan to take action against all terrorist groups, including the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), whose leadership and sanctuaries operate from Afghan soil.
Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar lauded the dedication and sacrifice of the security forces, vowing to eliminate the menace of terrorism. President Arif Alvi condemned the cowardly acts, asserting that such assaults would not weaken the resolve of security personnel. Political leaders, including PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and former president Asif Ali Zardari, extended condolences to the affected families, labeling attacks on civilians and security forces as unforgivable.
